about the archive

The Keepers of This Ledger

A small, independent desk with one aim: to gather what is known about lighthouses and coastal beacons and to file it in an order that a newcomer can follow.

Why this ledger exists

Information about lighthouses is plentiful but scattered. One museum holds the lens, an authority publishes the light's character, a local society knows the keepers' names, and a published history explains why the tower was built. A curious reader can spend an afternoon assembling a picture that should take ten minutes. This ledger does that assembling once, carefully, and keeps the result in order.

Who we are

The archive is kept by a small editorial team based in Cornwall, with backgrounds in maritime history, coastal walking and amateur radio. We are readers and visitors, not engineers or officials, and we write for people in the same position.

How entries are filed

  • Primary first
Authority publications, official light lists and museum catalogues take precedence.
  • Published histories second
Established works by the lighthouse services and recognised historians fill in context.
  • Disagreements stated
Where sources differ on a date or a figure, we give the more cautious version and say so.
  • Visiting details hedged
Opening arrangements change; we always advise checking with the operator.

Independence

We are not affiliated with Trinity House, the Northern Lighthouse Board, the Commissioners of Irish Lights or any other lighthouse authority, museum or society named here. We carry no advertising and accept no payment for mentions.

Corrections

If you find an error, please write to us with the source you rely on. Corrections are checked and, where confirmed, entered promptly.
